Red Mesa Science and Refining received the prestigeous "Outstanding Employer Support" award from the Navy in June of 2024. Red Mesa is 1 of only 47 companies nationwide honored with this award for the dedication and support to civilian - Navy Reservists whom help to defend and secure our Nation. Red Mesa's Commitment to Supporting Our Nation's Navy Reserve

Red Mesa Science & Refining was honored with the Navy’s “Outstanding Employer Support” award, recognizing the company’s dedication to supporting Reserve Sailors. This prestigious award was presented during the Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) at the Navy Air and Amphibious Base in Coronado, CA. Jeff Applegate, President of Red Mesa and Jarret Brown, Director of Operations, proudly accepted the award on behalf of the company.

“It was a surprise, for sure,” Applegate said “But I see it as a real honor to be included in the selection this year and to build an understanding of what reservists’ lives are like.”

Dual Role Contributions at Red Mesa and the Navy Reserves

Brianna Jenkins initiated the rigorous selection process by nominating Red Mesa for the award. Brianna holds the position of Director of Chemistry and Quality Assurance at Red Mesa and is also a Chief Select in the Navy Reserves.

Applegate said Jenkins’ “dependability, durability and her ability to multi-task are vital to her senior leadership position and contribution to the company overall”. Applegate said. ““She works for our company in the nucleus of responsibility, and her service and training are a big part of who she is.”

The “Outstanding Employer Support” award is reserved for organizations that go above and beyond in supporting Civilian – Reserve Sailors. Red Mesa Science & Refining stands out as 1 of the 47 companies nationwide to earn this honor, reflecting its efforts in accommodating and valuing the contributions of Reserve members. This award is a badge of honor and a symbol of the company’s utmost respect and gratitude for the military personnel safeguarding our nation.

The Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) is an annual gathering that acknowledges and celebrates the efforts of employers who support Reserve Sailors above and beyond the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Act. Held at the Navy Base in Coronado, CA, the event is celebratory, bringing together military officials and award recipients. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie, pride, gratitude and a commitment to continued excellence as the Navy extends its appreciation to the employers who support their Reserve employees.

Keynote Speech by John B. Mustin, Commander of the Navy Reserve Force

The event featured keynote speeches from high-ranking Navy officials, highlighting the importance of employer support for Reserve Sailors. Most notable was the impassioned speech from John B. Mustin, commander of the Navy Reserve Force, who underscored the Navy’s reliance on supportive employers like Red Mesa and the crucial role they play in maintaining the readiness and well-being of Reserve personnel.

“We’re here to show our thanks,” said Mustin, “Your support of your Navy Reserve employees is critical to our bi-coastal nation’s ability to maintain maritime dominance and to protect our economic vibrancy, our prosperity and our security.

“The Navy Reserve has one and only one priority,” said Mustin, “That, ladies and gentlemen, is warfighting readiness. Navy Reserve Sailors, your employees need to be ready to fight on day one when called upon – and I can assure you that the phenomenal support you provide is consequential and appreciated.”

Highlights from the Navy Employer Recognition Event

The Navy Marine Mammal Program personnel demonstrated mammals' extreme intelligence and capabilities to assist in the military, from helping to patrol our borders to retrieving equipment off the ocean floor. Pictured is a sea lion who demonstrated the retrieval of military equipment.

Navy Equipment and Capabilities Showcase

Honorees experienced the Navy’s equipment and capabilities firsthand by touring ships and aircraft and observing live demonstrations from the Navy Marine Mammal Program and military working dogs from the Navy Base San Diego Security Department. They also met with special warfare operators from SEAL Team 17, providing a close look at advanced weaponry displays. The day offered a comprehensive understanding of the military commitment of Red Mesa’s civilian reservists and emphasized the critical role of employer support in maintaining Navy warfighting readiness.

Outstanding Employer Support and the Importance it Plays in Our National Defense

“Employers like you, who support their reserve and guard members, are an important part of our national defense structure,” Mustin said as he concluded the event at the formal dinner aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum.
