Water Soluble CBD Powder vs Water Soluble CBD Liquid

Which Format Fits Your Formulation Requirements?

Image demonstrates Water Soluble Liposoll Powder is self-emulsifying and water soluble and can mixed into water-based formulations or powdered formulations.

FOUR MAIN APPROACHES TO WATER SOLUBLE – Each water-soluble technology sets out to achieve the same result: mixing oil with water. While various methods work, your choice can affect shelf life, potency per gram, taste, clarity and ultimately which products you can realistically make. This guide explains the main approaches to mixing oil-based cannabinoids, such as CBD, into aqueous formulations, with comparisons to aid in decision-making.

1. Nanoemulsion liquids

A nanoemulsion is cannabinoid oil sheared into droplets typically under a few hundred nanometers, held apart in water by emulsifiers (surfactants such as polysorbates, lecithin, saponins or gum acacia). It is shipped as a ready-to-dose liquid concentrate.

2. Spray-dried emulsion powders

This process dries a liquid emulsion onto a carrier (often maltodextrin, gum acacia or modified starch) so the droplets reform when water is added.

3. Liposomal and self-emulsifying powders

Liposomes are tiny spheres built from phospholipids, the same material as cell membranes, with the active trapped inside or within the membrane. Self-emulsifying delivery systems (SEDDS or SNEDDS) pre-mix the oil with lipids and emulsifiers so that it spontaneously forms nano-sized droplets on contact with water or digestive fluids. Newer technologies combine both ideas into a dry powder. (read more)

4. Other methods

  • Cyclodextrin complexes: sugar-based ring molecules that hold a cannabinoid in their center. Good water solubility, but loading is low.
  • Protein or fiber carriers: cannabinoids bound to a digestible protein or fiber matrix.
  • Micelles and simple solubilizers: high-surfactant systems that are inexpensive and clear but can taste soapy and are sensitive to pH and heat.
  • Glycerin or alcohol tinctures: dispersible, not truly water-soluble; fine for droppers, poor for beverages

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between liposomal and nanoemulsion?

A nanoemulsion suspends oil droplets in water using emulsifiers. A liposome encloses the active in a phospholipid shell similar to a cell membrane. Liposoll combines liposomal encapsulation with self-emulsification, so the dry powder forms nano-sized droplets when it meets water.

Generally yes. Smaller particles can be absorbed with less digestion, so onset is often within 10–30 minutes rather than the hour or more typical of oil-based edibles. Results vary by person and product.

Capsoil’s Liposoll technology has a clinically tested onset time of 8- 15 minutes, far faster than other methods.

Yes, if it disperses fully and stays stable in your specific drink. Test it in your actual formula, pH and packaging before scaling.

CBN, or pure Cannabinol, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa plants. While CBN is often associated with sedation and relaxation, it is generally considered non-psychoactive at standard doses compared to other cannabinoids like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Not technically. Cannabinoids do not truly dissolve in water. These technologies disperse them so finely that they behave as if they were dissolved.
